Oak & Hearth Furniture began in 2012 in a quiet suburban garage with nothing more than a second-hand table saw, a stack of reclaimed timber, and a simple idea: build furniture that lasts.

Its founder, Daniel Mercer, had spent years working in office sales jobs that never felt meaningful. On weekends, he restored old wooden furniture for friends and family. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a small side business after neighbors began asking if he could build custom dining tables and coffee tables for their homes.

The garage behind Daniel’s house became the company’s first workshop. During the day, he worked his regular job. At night, he sanded timber, assembled furniture, and answered customer messages from his phone. Every completed piece was photographed in the driveway and uploaded to social media marketplaces.

The first major breakthrough came when a local café ordered six handcrafted communal tables. The order nearly overwhelmed the tiny garage operation, but it proved there was real demand for affordable handmade furniture with character. Daniel reinvested every dollar back into the business, upgrading tools and eventually hiring a part-time assistant.

By 2015, Oak & Hearth had moved from the garage into a small warehouse on the edge of town. The company expanded its range from rustic farmhouse tables into entertainment units, shelving, office desks, and custom commercial fittings. Customers appreciated the company’s focus on sustainably sourced wood and handcrafted finishes.

As online sales grew, Oak & Hearth developed a reputation for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design. The business launched its own e-commerce store and began shipping furniture nationwide. Videos showing the building process attracted millions of views online, helping the brand grow organically without major advertising costs.

Today, Oak & Hearth Furniture operates a large production studio with a team of designers, carpenters, and delivery staff. Despite its growth, the company still keeps the original workbench from Daniel’s garage in the center of its showroom as a reminder of where it all started.

What began as a one-man operation in a garage became a respected furniture brand built on craftsmanship, persistence, and word-of-mouth trust.
